road map

Take a walk on the wild side and drive on the tarmac from Dar es Salaam Westwards to Morogoro. Don't hit town and do not miss  the junction going Southwards into the Uluguru Mountains. Say bye bye to the nice tarmac road, have your 4x4 fully fueled and head towards the gemstone market of Mkuyuni. In case you have no full tank, petrol and sometimes diesel can be purchased in bottles, but for a much higher price, in this village. Passing certainly one of the most beautiful landscapes of the country, you drive along the mountain forest village of Matombo, till you finally descend from the highlands coming down into the Savannah land. In Matambwe where you cross the TAZARA railways from Dar es Salaam to Zambia, you come to the Western main gate of the Northern Selous National Park. Pay your fees and have sufficient time to enter and to cross the Park, because there is a lot of game to see and you will certainly stop more than one time to watch, feel and to enjoy the Park. Therefore enter in the morning in order to reach after a leisure game drive at the Eastern gate called Mtemere, close to "River camp".

Another way to reach the camp goes from Dar es Salaam along the Kilva Road through thousands of rolling hills, covered with tall coconut palms to Kibiti. Last place for cold drinks as well as for fuel, because from there it goes in Southwest direction, off-road into the forest in till you reach almost at the Rufiji river. Along the stream you go for two hours on a sandy track in the direction of Mloka. Keep in mind that for this last 80 kilometer offroad an inexperienced driver might need up to 4 hours! Have good trip with lots of fun!
